Excerpt from THE FIRETENDERS

Colquitt's Division comes into line but it doesn't make a difference.
McClellan's guns have the range. He's blowing to
pieces the Rebel Army.

MCCLELLAN looks what is before him...

Malvern Hill is literally crawling with wounded and
dying men. YET THEY KEEP COMING!

Union CANNONS continue POUNDING the rebels --
BELCHING LONG PLUMES OF DIRTY ORANGE SMOKE...

REBEL BODIES are shattered. Turned to grease.
Stacking fragment upon fragment...

MCCLELLAN can't stand it any longer. He rides
to GENERAL COUCH...

                       MCCLELLAN
             Pull your men back!

Couch doesn't understand.

                       COUCH
             We're tearing them apart!

                       MCCLELLAN
Lee wouldn't risk his troops this
way! He must be holding reserves!

                       COUCH
             Our position is perfect.

                       MCCLELLAN
             We've carried the day, general!
             Do as you're ordered!

Couch looks dumbfounded.

SUPER: JULY 22nd - THE WHITE HOUSE

Stanton enjoys getting upset. As the moment he's
enjoying himself a great deal. He rails in front of
LINCOLN, whose posture resembles a car crash victim.
SALMON CHASE, Lincoln's Treasury Secretary, and JOHN
HAY, Lincoln's young secretary are also present.

                       STANTON
Each time we get word from that
              pompous fool, it reaches new
              heights of absurdity!

Chase enjoys Lincoln's misery...

                       STANTON
                   (continuing)
Now McClellan says he needs 50,000
              men! The whole of Burnside's
command! Then he can take Richmond!
What was it before? 20,000 men?
              It's a nightmare! Particularly given
the fact the idiot couldn't capture
an outhouse held by school kids.

                       CHASE
A complete turn in attitude, Edwin.
Given less than a year ago you asked
his approval in accepting your post
              as Secretary of War.

                       STANTON
Back then I was hoodwinked like
the rest of the country. How
would I know he only looked the
              part.

                       LINCOLN
Out of curiosity, Mr. Chase, how
much is it costing us to keep
              General McClellan in Virginia?

                       CHASE
              Our entire war budget.

                       STANTON
              Oh...Good, God! I'm sick!...

                       LINCOLN
Take three deep breaths, Mr. Stanton.

                       CHASE
...And that's if we brought him
              back last Saturday.

A stunned silence. Each man lost in his thoughts.
It's Lincoln who finally speaks...

                       LINCOLN
              It appears General McClellan's grand
design to end the war drew up a bit
              short.
